About Silchar

A city in the southern part of the state of Assam, Silchar is located on the banks of the Surma (Barak) River, not far from the Bangladesh border. In 1832, Captain Thomas Fisher laid the foundation for Silchar. Since then, the town has become the official district capital for both Cachar and Janiganj. Silchar’s name comes from a combination of two separate words. In Bengali, "shil" refers to rocks, whereas "chor" means coastlines.

Silchar has a tropical climate dominated by monsoons for most of the year. It is best to visit the city during winters as the weather remains pleasant and less humid.

The city of Silchar has a highly complex cultural landscape due to the convergence of many different civilisations, including Bengali, Assamese, Marwari, and the tribal Nagas. Since both Bengalis and Assamese people make up the majority of the population in Silchar, the city's cuisine is a fusion of the cuisines of these two communities. Some local specialities are duck curry with potato, kumura bhapa and bahor chungat maas.
