Kolhapur is famed for its Shri Mahalakshmi Temple; according to legend, Kolhapur got its name from a mythological occurrence in which Goddess Mahalakshmi vanquished a demon named Kolhasur, who oppressed the locals. Kolhasur's dying wish was that the territory in which he was killed be named after him; therefore, the town came to be known as Kolhapur.

The Bhonsle dynasty, Kolhapur's royal family, were proud descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
