About Leh Airport

The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IATA: IXL), also known as the Leh Airport, is located 4 km from the city centre. The airport was named in honour of the venerable Kushok Bakula Rimpoche, a significant Ladakhi and Indian statesman in his 19th incarnation. The airport is 3,256 m above sea level and is one of the world's highest commercial airports. Built in 1985, the airport was initially under the ownership of the India Air Force. In February 2016, the Indian Air Force handed the airport to the Airports Authority of India for AAI to develop it for civilian use. At the Leh Airport, there is a baggage facility along with trolleys for transferring luggage. There is a snack bar and many tea and coffee counters at the airport for refreshments for the passengers.
