Tuticorin is also known as Thoothukudi or Tuttukkudi. It is a city in Tamil Nadu that lies on the Gulf of Mannar. It is approximately 40 km from Tirunelveli and is connected to it by rail and road.Tuticorin has an exciting history. Earlier, it used to be a small fishing village. In the 16th century, it was developed into a Portuguese colony. Later on, it expanded during the Dutch and British regimes. Post-British rule, this city started improving its warehousing and fishing facilities in the late 1960s. However, the original port declined in terms of shipping as the new port in Chennai grew. So, shipping was shifted to the New Tuticorin Port, around 8 km from the original one. This new port is a major facility in India and can accomodate large vessels.Tuticorin is the largest salt producer in Tamil Nadu. It is also called ìPearl Cityî, as pearl cultivation is abundant here.
