About Tuticorin Airport

Tuticorin Airport (IATA Code: TCR) is situated around 16.9 km from Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. It also serves various other districts like Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, etc., and is the fifth-busiest airport in Tamil Nadu. Land acquisition of over 580 acres is being proposed by the AAI for the expansion of the current facility. Recently night landing facilities were being made functional at the airport.

There are lounge services for the tourists to relax for some time before the flight. There are Wifi, child care room, medical assistance centre, wheelchair services and baggage handling services within the premises. Since there is not much traffic at the airport, there is only one snack kiosk, Coffeemia.

Currently its single terminal has a departure and arrival passenger holding capacity of 78 each and two check-in counters with two runways each 1350 metres long.

Bus services and taxis travel to the city from the airport. The bus station is just 1.5 km away from the airport.

About Tuticorin

Tuticorin is also known as Thoothukudi or Tuttukkudi. It is a city in Tamil Nadu that lies on the Gulf of Mannar. It is approximately 40 km from Tirunelveli and is connected to it by rail and road.


Tuticorin has an exciting history. Earlier, it used to be a small fishing village. In the 16th century, it was developed into a Portuguese colony. Later on, it expanded during the Dutch and British regimes. Post-British rule, this city started improving its warehousing and fishing facilities in the late 1960s. However, the original port declined in terms of shipping as the new port in Chennai grew. So, shipping was shifted to the New Tuticorin Port, around 8 km from the original one. This new port is a major facility in India and can accomodate large vessels.


Tuticorin is the largest salt producer in Tamil Nadu. It is also called “Pearl City”, as pearl cultivation is abundant here. Many other industries like shipping, agricultural, power, and chemical industries also contribute to its economy.


Tuticorin is a beautiful city with a long sea coast having coastal villages, churches, mosques, temples, etc. The climate is delightful here, and all road, rail, and air transportation facilities are available. However, air connectivity is very limited.

Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary

Kattabomman Memorial Fort

This fort is built in the memory of Veerapandiya Kattabomman Karuthaiya Nayakkar, a freedom fighter, in 1974 in Panchalankurichi. It is 30 km away from the city centre. Sri Devi Jakkammal temple, the goddess of Kattabomman rests within the fortification. A cemetery for the British soldiers also lies nearby.
