About Bhuj

Bhuj is the crown jewel of Gujarat and represents the culture and tradition of the state in the most raw form. Situated in the Kutch region of Gujarat, Bhuj is also referred to as the desert city as there is a huge desert (called rann in the local language) here. It is more specifically called ësafed ranní meaning White desert as the colour of the sand here is pure white. The city came into being in the early 16th century under the rule of Rao Hamirji. Bhuj has a very fascinating history and witnessed the rise and fall of many empires. It has been ruled by the Nagas, Rajputs of Jadeja, Sultans of Gujarat, and of course, by the British government. Due to this, many forts and palaces were built here. However, when Gujarat was hit by a massive earthquake in 2001, the city literally crumbled and was reduced to mere debris. Despite this, it continues to be a major tourist attraction because even though there are numerous places which are completely in ruins, some marvellous structures still stand tall. Bhuj is a paradise for those who love to shop. Here, tourists would find many traditionally crafted handicrafts. The apparel of Bhuj is very colourful and is adorned with shiny and colourful stones and glasswork. In Bhuj, visitors get to gorge on the traditional food of Gujarat which is available in only a selected places in the state. Bhuj is said to have received its name from the nearby mountain range called Bhujiyo Dungar. It is also an important textile commercial centre. There are various places for people to explore here to deep dive into its history and culture.
