About Mangalore

Mangalore, which has been officially renamed Mangaluru, is a very prominent port city on the western coast of India. Situated on the shore of the Arabian Sea and in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats, Mangalore gained prominence as an important centre of trade and culture on the Malabar coast in the medieval era. It is a multicultural city with British, Portuguese, Spanish and Bristish influences. Today, along with being one of India’s major ports and a commercial hub, Mangaluru has flourished as a destination for domestic and international tourists. Historians have suggested that Mangalore was named after the deity Mangaladevi and that the city was originally known as Mangalapuram, a part of the erstwhile Pandyan kingdom. In the early sixteenth century, Mangalore came under heavy Portuguese influence but was eventually acquired by Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore. Today, it is among the largest urban agglomerations in Karnataka and is home to the state’s second-busiest airport. Being a coastal city with long, beautiful beaches, the city hosts millions of tourists every year. The coastline and the estuaries of the Netravati and Gurupura rivers encircle the city. Mangalore stretches some eighteen-odd miles from the coast to the foot of the Western Ghats on its eastern border. Consequently, the city has a tropical monsoon climate with heavy rainfall in the monsoon and cool, dry winters. The temperature does not drop significantly in the winter months, and that makes it an excellent coastal tourist spot. Sandy beaches aside, tourists in Mangalore love to visit its many architectural delights. A colonial-era lighthouse, its many temples, chapels and churches are frequented by local travellers and tourists regularly. The city is also known for its eclectic local cuisine. It is a mix of Malvani, Kannadi, and Malabar flavours. Coconut, curry leaves, chilli and fresh fish are common ingredients in its many delicacies. Neer dosa, ghee roast, and fried fish are some very prominent local dishes. Mangalore is also a melting pot of cultures, with speakers of Thulu, Konkani, Kannada and Beary living harmoniously in close proximity. Since people of different cultures settled down in Mangalore, it has developed unique forms of music and dance and celebrates popular festivals of all religions and denominations with equal fervour.
