Vijayawada airport, known as NTR Amaravati Airport (IATA: VGA), is an international airport spread over 500 acres. Earlier, it facilitated domestic travel and connected the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region to other states. However, the Chief Minister outlined plans to establish a new airport in 2015. It is about 17 km from the city in the Gannavaram region, where NH-16 connects Chennai to Kolkata pass-through. The airport was an army base during the Second World War. The airport has a single terminal spread over 850 sq m and a capacity of 50 for arrivals and 100 for departures. With one boarding gate on the ground floor, the terminal offers nine check-ins and one security counter.
