The terrace in this hostel is incredible, with a great view over the sea. The bathrooms are kept nice and clean. The cleanliness however of the 12 bed shared room for men is questionable. But for the price you pay, it's what you should expect.

I just visited here, didn't stay here. it is nicely laid out and has a great location. Babilonia is a safe and comfortable favela in Rio, I'd definitely recommend a visit. I'm giving it least than five stars because the ownership is not Brazilian, and the model feels a little exploitive. I noticed a green roof and solar panels, and a very clean kitchen. I'm sure it's a lovely place to stay.

I was hoping for better. I took a private room, that wasn't very clean when I arrived. It seems that only the sheets were changed (used towel on the wardrobe, hairs in the shower and dead mosquito on the wall. We have to throw toilet paper in the bin but they don't change it every day... The room is full of signs like "Don't leave your things in the bathroom" (???), "5 minutes showers", "Air conditioning only at night". I didn't use the kitchen much but it wasn't always clean and couldn't even find a bowl... The staff didn't speak English so couldn't be really helpful (there was a nice French lady at night which helped in my case). The area felt safe enough, if you don't want to hike up the hill where it is located you can pay 3 or 4 BRL for a moto-taxi. Although it's one of the cheapest option I've found to be so close to the beach in a private room (still about 50€ per night!), I was a bit disappointed by the place and value of it.

My room had a poor circulation. The air conditioner doesn't reach me well because it is nicely blocked by another bunk-bed. Some people also come in late and can cause noises. I wouldn't recommend this hostel for sleep. I would recommend this for meeting people from all over the world! Do note that people can smoke by the balcony, which is spreads in the living room anyway. Bleh.
