Canalview Hotel Ter Reien

They're renovating and don't even have the decency to close the hotel while doing that - because they only want to make more more. All the room description more likely are for the big building, that isn't open now - they only have rooms in an annex building - and even though most likely they want to keep those they really look improvised - ±4 sqm with the bathroom and everything and the bathroom's walls are basically cardboard.

First the good. It’s on a pretty canal, about a 7 minute walk from the main square. The included breakfast is buffet, and very nice. It’s right on the free shuttle bus from the train station. The Bad-the aim of this place seems to be to take in as much money as possible by doing the least. We arrived and our room wasn’t ready-fair enough as it was 2:15. The man in reception allowed us to leave our luggage in an unsecured room but wouldn’t let us use the restroom off the lobby. We asked about a near by restaurant where we could have something to eat before we checked in and he told us to walk to the main square where all the restaurants were excellent-and was completely unwilling to just suggest a non-touristy restaurant nearby. Our room was on the third floor with one very small window. No screens. It was 88 and we asked for a fan since it was pretty miserable and he said they would not provide on since it was a budget hotel. On a pretty canal also falls under the bad-we got eaten by mosquitos if we had the window open and the heat was even worse if we closed the window. You want a hair dryer? 5E. You want shampoo? 5E. The picture on the website shows a very pretty room with a canopy bed. Our room was all laminate, very much a hostel vibe with a sliding bathroom door that didn’t close completely and the handle broken off the inside so the only way to get out was to push it out off the upper track, reach around and tease it open. Now the ugly. We all had many mosquito bites but my one daughter couldn’t sleep because they were so itchy. On the day we checked out I took a look and they were in typical patterns for bedbug bites. We had to treat her with topical steroids and benedryl and while the rest of us had our bites resolved in a couple of day, her bites will still quite red and itchy 10 days later. Only one bed seem to be infested and we are always careful about not putting clothes or luggage on a bed, so we don’t seem to have brought anything with us. The desk was closed when we checked out so I couldn’t report it but I have emailed and the hotel seems quite unconcerned. Note other reviews that mention major problem with bug bites.
