The overall experience was great for a night. A huge dinner and breakfast are included and the place has their private onsens. There are some that are private (you book upon check in) and can use by yourself or with 1 or 2 more people and others that are shared. We could book the 2 private ones for 1 hour so we didn’t use the communal ones. The experience of being in such a calm and quiet place with the constant sound of the river wearing the rope that they give you was awesome, it feels like a spa. Location is also very convenient near to the bus and Hakone center. However, a little bit far if you prefer to be close to the activities next to the lake. The not so positive thing are the shared bathrooms and a little bit pricey but overall it was very positive.

I had a wonderful experience as a solo traveler here. The ryokan is so pretty and atmospheric. The rushing river outside of my window was calming. The staff were kind and helpful and the food was just amazing. I used the communal onsens in addition to the private one and had them all to myself. I’m already planning to take a detour on my next trip to Tokyo to go back. The only minus is that the bathrooms are communal and the one on the ground floor is super tiny but I still can’t help but rate this place five stars.

Stayed in the Sakura 5 room with 3 people. Plenty of space for our group and GORGEOUS view of the river... I will never forget falling asleep to the sound of water rushing over river rocks. We only stayed 1 night and I wish we had stayed 2 nights to fully enjoy the facilities and sightseeing. Our host was wonderful and would use Google translate to assist her English which was very kind. The dinner was out of this world, an amazing display of traditional Japanese food. The private onsen rooms were fantastic. I would 100% stay here again if I ever return to Hakone. There was a small AC unit in the room to make it more comfortable since it is so warm in the summer.

Established in 1890, this ryokan is over a hundred years! So one can expect this ryokan to feel and look old. We knew this before booking and we enjoyed our stay very much. This was also our first time at a ryokan. It was only a 15 minutes walk from Hakone Yamamoto Station. We stayed in room, Sakura 5 which was on the top floor and next to the river. It was huge for just the 2 of us. It's cheaper if you book directly from their website and payment is only required after check out. Our attendant, Mori was wonderful. He made us feel welcomed and was very courteous and polite. We checked in around 5pm and had our in room dinner at 6pm. Dinner and breakfast are included in the room price. Alcoholic beverages is extra. They have plum wine that is made in house but we opted for a bottle of sake. We both picked the Japanese kaiseki set. Everything was delicious. After resting we went to use the private onsen. There's 5 onsens: 3 private and 2 public separated by male and female. We scheduled one at night and one before breakfast. It was so relaxing! If only we could stay longer but our stay in Hakone was short. It was an unforgettable experience and I highly recommend staying here.

Awesome ryoken very close to the center of town and the train/bus station. This has a very traditional, authentic vibe from the onsens (3 of which are private and you book when you get check in, at 3pm) to the rooms to the robes you are given. Food was also excellent. If you are picky either with your bed or food (in the sense that you don't like anything adventurous or different from standard western stuff) I would probably stay away from this but if that is your jam then this is great!
