The location was convenient and the staff were friendly. But everything else was bad. I've been staying in hostels all around NZ for the past 10 months and this is the worst hostel I've ever stayed in. The dorm room had no window and smelled horrible. They didn't provide duvets, only a thin blanket that was dirty and covered with hair. Almost everyone in my room was sleeping in sleeping bags. It gets pretty chilly at night! The kitchen was always filthy with dirty dishes piled around. The entire hostel smelled like cigarette smoke because the smoking area led right into the hostel. For $45/night, it was a rip off. I also think the place is a fire safety hazard. Would suggest to pay a bit more to get decent accommodation elsewhere.

Booked because close to Auckland Hospital but no parking close to unpack. Room is like a concrete escape room. One light in ceiling - no window - not even a bedside light. TV is on wall and unable to be pivoted so difficult to see from bed - there is only a stool in the room so bed is the only place to really sit. There is a bar fridge, microwave and jug in the room but no tea/coffee/milk. Unable to cancel booking as charged the morning of check-in. Would not recommend if wanting more than a VERY basic hostel experience - certainly not worth $130 per night for a single room.

This is the worst place I have ever stayed at in Auckland. They don't state it in their listing but the hostel is in a basement with a club above it on one side and a retail store on the other. Both places play music day and night. LOUD music. The club plays their music during club hours. So, 2am you can hear loud music while the ceiling vibrates with speakers on top of it. Imagine trying to sleep next to a giant speaker in a nightclub and that's it exactly. The manager is very nice and tries to be accommodating but there's nothing he can do about the location. Of course, if they included that fact in their listing- nobody would stay there. Virtually everyone who works there is from South America so all Spanish speakers staying there are allowed to be as loud and obnoxious as they want. But only them. The issue is it's a small place and they take up the common areas and the kitchen at all hours and are quite loud. They know they can do whatever they want so they just ignore the other guests and behave as loudly and rudely as they want. However, for the short time the manager is there during the day, they behave. That's it though. Between the obnoxiously loud constant yelling in Spanish and the nightclub blasting music nightly, this is not a place to rest, relax, sleep or feel comfortable. There are plenty of other less expensive places in the city centre to choose to stay. Please learn from my mistake and literally stay anywhere else to avoid the stress and frustration.

I would like to thank Dave the manager, he was very accommodating and welcoming. On my check out day he helped book me a rideshare as my phone was not working. He escorted me all the way to the driver making sure I was in the vehicle safely. What a superb customer service considering I was a newcomer guest! I booked private rooms, one ensuite and the other double share for two nights on a separate booking , and on arrival I was checked in by a warm and friendly staff, Matthias, he greeted me, took my backpack with a smile and at the reception counter he told me that I've been upgraded to stay in the same room by the manager and I didn't have to move to another room. I was so happy! I get to stay in the same room for a free upgrade. I got a corner room and it was super quiet. Matthias had courteously provided me earplugs which was not needed during my stay. Surprisingly my room was quiet the entire 2 nights I was there. I only heard occasional footsteps and very minimal conversations heards across the hall ways but didn't bother me at all and for a hostels that's normal. Soundproofing was quite good. The room across me was a dorm full of other backpackers and they were so quiet it worried me lol. I thought it was nice and thoughtful of them to have shown welcoming and respectful gestures to other guests. I wish I had the chance to socialized with them but I was tired and slept all day. At night I went to the nice Japanese Yakitori Bar (Chef Ken). Contrary to what others complained about HIT being basement built, I actually do like that the hostel has an edgy industrial vibe to it, yes it is basement type of hostel but that way, it's underground and you don't hear noises from the street and the door is 24/7 locked with a key code system that only guests are allowed to enter and exit. Lucas was also wonderful. The staffs are Mediterranean or South Americans and they're hospitable well trained, professional, fluent in English. Gosh some people commenting here against a race are so racist. I had no issues with any nationalilites or communicating with them at all. Plus Hispanics are warmer and chatty people in my experience. Toilets, showers, beddings, sheets, pillows, smelled good, all clean, TV worked, fan, aircond worked, heating system. What I loved most was there is a electrical water kettle in my room! I get to make hot chocolate and hot cup noodles. My stay at HiT was comfortable, safe, had a quiet sleep, smooth free, wonderful just wonderful! Would defo come back!
