Lunuganga Estate

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Lunuganga in Bentota, Sri Lanka, and I must say, it was an absolutely enchanting experience. Lunuganga is a place designed by the legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa, so I knew I could expect awe-inspiring architecture and breathtaking landscapes - and I was not disappointed. The landscapes and architecture at Lunuganga are truly unique and amazing. The attention to detail in capturing the cultural heritage and dynamics of the area is evident in every corner. The design of the buildings and the layout of the gardens create a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. One of the highlights for me was how the architecture kept the rooms cool even in the hot weather, showcasing Bawa's genius in creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional. Speaking of the rooms, they are spacious and beautifully designed with a natural touch. The use of wooden beam architecture adds a rustic charm to the rooms, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It truly feels like a retreat in nature. The hospitality at Lunuganga was at its best. The manager, (special mention to Robert), and his staff were incredibly warm and accommodating. Their thorough knowledge of the history of the place added an extra layer of depth to the experience. They made sure that every guest felt welcomed and taken care of. Now, let's talk about the food. With only 7 rooms, Lunuganga and low number of people in the estate, they are in a position to use only organic ingredients to prepare their meals, and the result is simply amazing. The variety of Sri Lankan dishes and their authenticity were remarkable. The chef deserves special praise for creating such delicious and flavorful meals. During my visit, I had the opportunity to join a tour guide who took me across the acres of land, providing a fascinating insight into the history of Lunuganga. It was a truly enriching experience, and I highly recommend joining the tour if you don't already have an idea about the place. Overall, my visit to Lunuganga was a memorable one. The combination of awe-inspiring architecture, breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and delicious organic food made it a truly special experience. I am already planning my next visit, although I know availability can be a challenge. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend visiting Lunuganga and immersing yourself in its beauty and tranquility.

I felt so sad about this visit. You have to buy a tour, whereas previously it was possible to rock up and walk around. Nothing worked.. "Look at this lamp it is so clever that the heat from the candle makes a fan turn" - but it doesn't work. "Here's the amazing patio by the river designed as a chess set" - but it's never been cleaned and there are trees growing up in the middle of it. And so it goes on. 40 years ago this would have been astonishing, 20 years ago when we first visited it was charming. Yesterday was a travesty and one that cost me £50 for the four of us. No redeeming features. Sorry.
