A really nice hotel - we stayed a couple of nights and it was lovely. However, it has seen better days on the interior - wallpaper peeling, carpet very worn, toilet seat was un-fixable, could do with a lick of paint, TV was old, but working. The grounds were lovely, and looked amazing when the temperature was -5 in the mornings! Staff were really friendly and helpful. Didn't get time for the pool and spa, but had a quick nose and it looked pretty nice.

Based on a single recent visit for lunch (on 2nd January), I wouldn't recommend the restaurant at the Crutherland. The menu which was advertised (and booked!) via the website was not available, and we were offered just a very limited "spa menu" instead. Service was awfully slow - difficult to say this was only due to having only a single member of staff serving, as it seemed to take an age for anything to be ready from the kitchen. How long does it take to make sandwiches, I wonder? The bread used in the sandwiches was from a slightly stale brown sliced loaf - we were told there had been no delivery so white bread (and presumably fresh brown bread) was unavailable. It looked like a standard supermarket style sliced loaf in any case - they should do better. The coffee was made fresh, but either the quality or amount of the coffee beans, or both, was poor. We were charged just over £40 for lunch. I expect a lot better when paying £9 for a sandwich. The building is nice and has a lot of character, and the staff are friendly enough. I've enjoyed meals at the Crutherland before (albeit many years ago), but perhaps now there is too much emphasis on keeping costs down at the expense of the consumer's experience.

Amazing setting, traditional hotel with great spa facilities. Enjoyed the hot steam room. Rooms are a bit dated, beds were not the best being 2 separate mattresses pushed together couldn't quite sleep well with my partner. Nice bath and room was spacious. Poor power points no where to charge anything as lights were on 5amp spurs so had to plug in tv socket. Still a nice enough stay.
