Opera Hotel

Stayed at this hotel a few times and the service quality has always remained stable. The rooms are spacious, well lit, and well decorated. There is a variety of open spaces and lougnes which offer a nice atmosphere for social conversations and relaxing. A variety of other services are also provided, and all with an excellent service. Despite being well located and close to the city center I found myself going to the hotel's restaurant quite often as the food and service quality were both more than satisfactory.

Boy do I have a lot to say about this place. I rarely find issue with accommodations, even when things go wrong or something is uncomfortable I tend to let it roll off my back, but safety is something I cannot compromise on. During night 3 of our 3 night stay at Opera Plaza Hotel a member of the hotel staff entered our room in the middle of the night, awaking us from a deep sleep. He said we were to call reception (no phone call was received from reception prior to this entry), when we called they said they were just trying to “verify the room” - I asked why they thought it was appropriate to do that in the middle of the night and they could not provide any answer. Needless to say I was rattled and did not fall back asleep for many hours. In the morning I asked to speak with someone at reception about the incident and was asked to wait for the manager. Almost 1 hour later we were able to speak with the manager who apologized and said they got the rooms mixed up - so I guess the breaking in in the middle of the night wasn’t seen as the issue, just that they got the wrong room. We were offered complementary spa treatments and later check out to compensate but that didn’t negate the violation of having someone enter our room and wake us up. Not to mention the arms length list of other faults at the hotel: the yucky carpet all throughout which smelled of stale cigarette smoke despite their attempts to cover it up with very strong fake floral smells in the hallways, the very loud rooms where you can hear everything from the street and the hallway, the wifi which kept dropping in the rooms and the common areas, the incredibly uncomfortable beds which felt like sleeping on a slab of concrete, the dirt and bugs found on the floor in the bathroom, the fact there was no soap provided in the room and it felt like we were on rations for toilet paper, the two separate beds provided for a couple, the lack of air conditioning despite 30 degree weather in November, the stale food at breakfast. Unfortunately I can’t comment on the pool, we didn’t try it as most of the loungers were dirty and covered in bird poo. The good? Well, the location seemed convenient enough, and they were quick to provide amenities like toilet paper when asked.
