Pastell Oldtown Chiang Mai

We were not wowed by the place, but it was fine (just barely fine). Room: Our room was fine. Basic amenities. The loft is nice. Note that the lofted bed is a mattress on the floor and is quite hard. The pillows are nice! The ”stairs” to the loft are actually more of a ladder (quite steep). There is no artwork on the walls and the lofted area is literally a mattress on the floor, an end table, and a lamp. There are detailed posters about how much you will owe if you break something. Staff: Our biggest concern is with the staff. Although they were friendly, they had a difficult time communicating or getting things done. A good description would be kind, but inept. I think it was a language fluency issue. They had difficulty answering general questions about the area or planning our airport trip. We stayed 4 nights. We asked for a room with two king beds and were given a room with two twins and a king. They came to push our twin beds together, but this did not solve the problem. Our phone was broken. They came to fix it, but this did not solve the problem. Our room was cleaned once in the four days we stayed, even though we requested it to be cleaned each day. Finally someone emptied the trash. When our room was cleaned, we were given towels that had holes and frayed edges. We didn’t bother mentioning it as it wouldn’t matter. Our most positive interaction with a staff member was at 3:30am upon checkout. Location: The location is convenient. Very walkable around the Old City. It’s a 3 minutes walk to a park with a playground, which was one of the reasons we booked here. Pool: Unfortunately, the pool is quite shaded, so the water is pretty chilly in December. FYI: If you’re going to the airport for a 6:00am flight, check in doesn’t open until 4:00. Security doesn’t open until 5:00. Restaurants are not open after security, but one food place opens at 4:30, before security. (This information would have been nice to know from the front desk.)
