What a great hotel! The staff was so nice to us! The room was big with an ocean view! The location was perfect. You don't need a car when coming to Thompson Hotel, right in the middle of the action ! Bars restaurants, beach music, and happiness surround the location. There's 2 Thompson Hotel in the city , we chose the beach house, but we went to the roof top of the other hotel and it was amazing! They have a beautiful rooftop with pool, Japanese restaurants, and drinks . Totally recommended

This hotel is on 8th North and right in the middle of the action in Playa del Carmen. If you want to be close to all of the restaurants and shops this is an ideal location. The hotel promoted itself as a five star, Hyatt Hotel - but in my opinion, it’s in need of a lot of work and maintenance. Even a little bit shabby in some places. For instance, the glass screen on our 2nd floor balcony deck was held together with rusty brackets, and looked pretty dangerous. Lots of areas of rusty and unpainted metal and a tired looking building. The hotel charges you for some extra room items. For example if you use more than the two coffee capsules supplied per day, you can order more from the front desk, but they charge you. They charge you for additional bottles of water too, if you drink more than two supplied on a daily basis. Which is a little cheap given it was $400 per night. The hotel is right on the beach, but make sure you get there early as they do not have enough loungers for all hotel guests to use. They do have a cute, small pool with sun loungers and cabanas but again, space is limited. The bar staff were friendly and pool bar drinks were generous. We did not find the hotel food to be good at all. We had lunch in the restaurant, and ordered nachos. The cheese on the nachos was liquid “Cheese Whiz”, which was incredibly disappointing. We also ordered room service on our first night, as we arrived late. The club sandwich was tasteless, the salad was a weird construction of beetroots, apple and lettuce with very little dressing. The person deliver in the room service asked for a tip in cash because “it would be better for him“ which was strange to say the least. The hotel takes advantage of the fact that it’s in central PDC and doesn’t do a good job with food. Luckily there are other restaurants close by for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We found the hotel to be noisy at night very close to loud bars and strip clubs. Convenient for these if that’s why you’re in PDC. When walking through the main street of PDC, be prepared to be constantly stopped and accosted for all kinds of services from street vendors. Massages, tourist gifts, tequila, clothing etc….we were literally stopped 20+ times when we walked for 30 minutes on the main street. Overall, we felt that the hotel was a waste of money compared to other hotels that we stayed at in Mexico. Staff need to work on the service and the food was pretty poor, plus the building needs a massive upgrade and maintenance.

We stayed here in December for 4 nights. The a/c worked for one day and did not work the rest of the time. Complained to the manager and they kept saying it will get fixed shortly, but never did fix it. We had to sleep with the doors open, the noise and the heat were very uncomfortable. After we left I wrote to the manager and left a bad review in email, they said they will return my points and never did. This led me to write a review online after manager heard from them at all. Gave them ample time to amend my situation but they never did, like they don’t care. If they contact me I can give them my booking details also, to fix my issue. If they fix it I will remove this post.

This place was fantastic. Just what we were looking for in a last minute getaway. This hotel is right off the main strip for nightlife and activities and makes everything super easy to walk to. But do be warned, if you don’t shell out the extra cash for the premium beachfront rooms you may regret it. Senior Frogs is literally steps from the hotel, as well as another open air nightclub so you will be unable to sleep due to the way the rooms are situated. The closer you are to the beach the more restful your sleep will be. The last reviewer here mentioned there was no beach left after a storm or something. Well, as of August 2023 that was not the case - the beach was gorgeous and walkable for as far as the eye could see in both directions. It’s probably not fair to blame weather shifts on the hotel and say it was a “misrepresentation” of the beach. Our only issue with the beach was also due to seasonal conditions and that was the shifting seaweed. But what can you do. The hotel staff were out there every morning working to clear it out as best they could from the beach and the water was just unseasonably discolored in spots for the same reason. What can you do? The one thing I wished our room would have improved upon was the AC and the humidity levels. Although the AC was a central unit, it was likely and old system not updated to regulate humidity in the room because although we could set the temp to 65 F every day/night, the humidity was still clearly present and it was just oppressive. I would wake up every night drenched in sweat despite the AC being at full blast. Granted it was hot as hades everywhere we went so cold showers multiple times a day were required anyway, but this just made it hard to escape it. The plunge pool was nice but it could have been kept cleaner. We didn’t really use it. It had a strange film on the top and would have liked to see it have more circulation in the water so it was a place to cool down. Otherwise, the patio is phenomenal and the hotel is quite nice for the price and location. Don’t expect five stars but if you’re looking for a cute boutique hotel in the center of everything that is a solid 4 stars, then this is your spot.

Great stay at the Thompson! This property is right on the beach with beach views for meals at the C Grill. If you stay at this location you are welcome to use the adjacent Main House's amenities such as the rooftop pool, fitness center. Everything you need is walking distance from the hotel and I was unable to hear the loud street noises at night. The rooms were clean and well maintained and they also have bikes that you can borrow and use around town from 9am-6pm!
