After the restoration works, which allowed the reopening of the Tower in Piazza dei Signori in June 2010, the Astrarium Clock, created in 1344 by Jacopo Dondi da Chioggia, is back in operation in Padua. In 1437 the Astrario clock was faithfully reconstructed by the clockmakers Matteo Novello, Giovanni and Giampietro dalle Caldiere. The Clock represents the Ptolemaic astronomical theory of a geocentric system which placed the Earth at the center of the Universe. The Tower, 30 m high. from the street level, it has 5 internal floors, of which the first 3 were intended to contain the parts of the clock mechanism, the other 2 constituted the residence of the master watchmaker, custodian and maintenance man. The cage movement is equipped with 2 "trains": the time train and the bell sound train. Astrarium clock in Piazza dei Signori The dial has a circular shape: the numbering of the hours is engraved in the external band with Roman characters, the internal band, made of lead plates, shows the copper stars. The third band, however, contains the zodiac symbols in relief. In the center is planet Earth.

The Clock Tower represents one of the symbols of the Carrarese era in Padua and contains seven centuries of history and some mystery. The Beautiful clock tower is located in the Piazza Dei Signori and positioned between the Palazzo del Capitanio and the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi. The Tower was raised between 1426 and 1430 on the ruins of the eastern gate of the Reggia Carrarese, residence and seat of the government of the lords of the city, built at the behest of prince Ubertino da Carrara, who was part of the Carraresi clan of Padua, he was later the Lord of Padua from 1338 to 1345. The design and construction of the clock was overseen by Giovanni Dondi also known "dell'Orologio", who was an Italian physician, astronomer and mechanical engineer. The dial has a circular shape, with the planet Earth in the center, according to the Ptolemaic astronomical theory of a geocentric system, the outer band is engraved with the numbering of the hours in Roman characters, the inner band contains the copper stars. In the third band we see the zodiac signs. The attentive observer will see that there are 11 symbols: Scorpio occupies two squares, and Libra is missing. A popular legend tells that Dondi was dissatisfied with the economic treatment reserved for him by the clients, so he decided to remove the sign of the scales, a symbol of (lack of) justice.

The clock tower is one of many symbols recalling the era of the Carrara family in the history of Padova. The monument and its mechanism became an abiding presence in the daily life of the townspeople -and other besides- during the 14th century. his impressive buildin, standing in the Piazza dei Signori, between the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi and the Palazzo del Capitanio, was erected between 1426 and 1430 over the ruins of the east gate of the reggia Carrarese. It was during 1427 that the Capitanio Bortolomeo Morosini ordered work to begin on enlarging and adapting the tower, precisily in order to accomodate the great clock made by Giovanni and Gian Petro Dalle Caldiere. The dial was decorated in 1436 by Giorgio da Treviso. Once the preparation of the tower had been completed in 1430, work could begin on installing the new mechanismthat the city wished so earnestly to see in place. At last, during the celebration for the Feast of S. Antony in 1437, the people of Padova were able to witnessin inauguration. In 1532, Giovanni Maria Falconutto was commissioned to design the triumphal arch, in Istrian stone, wich gave access to Piazza Capitanio, reflecting a more open relationship with the citizens and replacing the Gothic gateway wich had previously led to the Reggia Carrarese.
