About Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a Union Territory and the joint capital of the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. After the Partition of India in 1947, the state of Punjab was left with no capital city as the former capital, Lahore, was given to Pakistan. The Indian government considered many options as the capital of Punjab, such as Amritsar, Jalandhar, Karnal, Phillaur, Shimla, Ludhiana and Ambala, but eventually decided to build a new city that would be a symbol of modernity and pride - echoing the spirit of the new India. The city of Chandigarh was the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. It was planned by famous French architect Le Corbusier, who had been invited by Nehru to design this new urban administrative centre. Much of Chandigarh was built in the 1950s and '60s and is famous for its modernist architecture, best seen in masterpieces such as the Secretariat, High Court and Legislative Assembly. And there is, of course, the giant installation of ëThe Open Handí, the official symbol of Chandigarh. Chandigarh has a well-developed infrastructure and low population density. One of the most organised cities in India, it is a fine example of urban planning and has earned the moniker ìThe City Beautifulî. The city takes its name from the Chandi Mandir near the city. ìChandiî is the goddess of power, while ìgarhî means ëdwelling placeí or ëfortí. The city is home to many beautiful parks and lakes, which adds an air of peace and tranquility.
