Adalaj Stepwell 

The Adalaj Stepwell is located in a village by the same name in Gandhinagar city around 18 Km from Ahmedabad’s Kalupur Railway station. This stunning architectural beauty constructed out of sandstone stands five stories tall and has an octagonal shape. This classical architectural piece built in 1499 perfectly combines geometric designs and Islamic floral patterns. There are large windows on every floor that let the light and air in and paint the intricately carved pillars on each floor in a different colour depending on the position of the sun throughout the day or the moon at night. Three different entrance stairs lead into the stepwell. One notable feature of the place is that the navgraha is believed to protect the temple from all evil spirits. Thousands of visitors visit the Adalaj Stepwell to witness the breathtaking view from the windows on the first floor. There are several pillars present in the Adalaj Stepwell, and every floor is spacious enough to hold up to 100 people at a time. Apart from still providing water to the people in the surrounding areas, this is also a place of worship.

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary

Nal Sarovar, which translates to Tap Lake, is a famous tourist spot that is home to a large variety of bird species, both migratory and local. This bird sanctuary comprises nearly 36 islands, making it an ideal breeding ground for birds who find ample food and nesting spaces here. The Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is located at Sanand village, around 64 Km from Ahmedabad city in Gujarat. The site, declared a sanctuary in 1969, is spread across a vast area of around 121 sq Km. One thing which attracts a bunch of tourists is the wide variety of migratory birds that are often seen here. With nearly 200 bird species, it is one of the biggest bird sanctuaries in India and the largest in Gujarat. An absolute paradise for casual visitors, bird watchers, and photographers, this place is buzzing with people throughout the year, with the winters drawing in the largest crowds. State transport buses and private taxis are easily available here throughout the day.

Kankaria Lake 

Located in the south-eastern part of Ahmedabad, the Kankaria Lake near the Maninagar area is the second-largest lake in Ahmedabad and was built in 1451. It sports various tourist attractions such as a zoo, aquarium, kids city, toy train, tethered hot-air balloon ride, water rides, and an expansive pedestrian walking area. The lake itself is around 4 sq Km wide. This is a very popular tourist destination that has a footfall of around 70 lac people on weekdays alone, with over 1.18 crore people already having visited the lake after it was reopened to the public. The lake has an island that encompasses Nagina Wadi, a popular garden floating right in the middle. Kankaria lake is emerging as a major arts and culture platform and often hosts musical nights, light and sound shows, and fireworks displays as well. Before the pandemic struck, the week-long Kankaria Carnival held every year in December drew large crowds.

Sabarmati Ashram  

Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Harijan Ashram was originally established in Kochrab, Ahmedabad and was later shifted to the banks of the Sabarmati river in 1917. It was earlier called Satyagraha Ashram and was home to Mahatma Gandhi from its inception up to 1930 when he vowed not to step foot into the ashram till India was a free country. This was also the place that marked the beginning of the Dandi March on March 12, 1930, towards Dandi around 275 Km away. Though he never visited the ashram again, the place was converted into a museum to pay homage to the ideology of the Mahatma. The museum now houses various artefacts used by Mahatma Gandhi and related to the freedom struggle, paintings, letters, and photographs. The site is well connected and one can take a local bus, train which connects all major cities of India with Ahmedabad, or travel by air to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad which is just 11 minutes away to get to the ashram.

Sabarmati Riverfront
