Ajanta Caves, located 101 km from Aurangabad town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are a group of 30 caves dating back from the 1st century BCE to the 7th century CE, and depict Buddhist scriptures, paintings, and sculptures. The carvings are believed to have been made by Buddhist monks using chisels and hammers. The carvings tell stories from the Jataka Tales and depict scenes from Buddhist culture.
This group of 12 Buddhist caves dates back to 3 AD. The Aurangabad Caves are situated 9 km outside the city of Aurangabad. Sculpted out of Basalt Rock, this site is considered one of the most pristine caves in India.
Bibi Ka Maqbara is based on the spectacular architecture of the Taj Mahal and for this reason, is referred to as the Taj of the Deccan. This stunning tomb was erected in memory of Aurangzeb’s first wife, Dilras Banu Begum.
Daulatabad Fort dates back to the year 1187, when it was built by the Yadava Dynasty. It was formerly known as Deogiri. It is said that Muhammad Tughlak was so taken by its beauty that he moved his capital from Delhi and set up base here, renaming the place Daulatabad.
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the miniatures at Ellora Caves are similar to that of Ajanta and depict three religions and ancient inscriptions. There are 34 caves at this site.
Grishneshwar Temple is located 1.6 km from Ellora Caves and 32.7 km northwest of Aurangabad city. It is also called Ghrneshwar or Ghushmeshwar Temple. This 18th-century temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and attracts many tourists as it is an important pilgrimage destination.
