About Amritsar

Amritsar is the cultural capital of Punjab and home to the sacred Golden Temple that invites millions of pilgrims per year. The city gets its name from Amrit Sarovar - meaning Pool of nectar - surrounding the Golden Temple. Guru Ramdas Ji, the fourth Sikh guru, founded the city in 1574 A.D and constructed Amrit Sarovar. The city is famous for its mythological and historical ties like the writing of Ramayana, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, proximity to the Wagah border, and more. There is no dearth of tourist points of interest in Amritsar. Golden Temple, Durgiana Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort, Akal Takht, Ram Tirth, and Harike Bird Sanctuary are some of the top places to visit in Amritsar. Amritsar is a hub for scrumptious food as Punjabis are very fond of satiating hunger through legendary Amritsari Lassi, Sarso Da Saag, Makki Di Roti, Butter Chicken, and Shahi Paneer. November to March are apt for sightseeing and pleasant weather makes it the best time to visit Amritsar. It is in these months that popular festivals like Guru Nanak Jayanti, Ram Tirth Fair, Basant Panchami, and Lohri are celebrated with great gusto.
