The city was originally called Jambu Nagar; over centuries, it became Jammu.

Situated on the banks of the Tawi River, the city’s iconic skyline is recognisable from the spires of the many temples spread out across the area. Jammu is also home to numerous places of worship for Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians, honouring its founding principle. Visitors and pilgrims heading to the Vaishno Devi shrine commence their journey from Jammu.

The temperature in the city of Jammu varies drastically between winters and summers: the temperature in summers can cross 40°C, and the winter temperatures can fall below 2°C. However, compared to the other regions in the Union Territory, the winter temperatures in Jammu are moderate.

Popularly known as the ‘City of Lakes’ because of the many natural and artificial lakes in the city, Bhopal is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is also listed as one of the greenest cities in India. The city has retained its old-world charm despite heavy industrialisation. Some parts of the city still have retained their narrow alleyways and bustling market spaces. In stark contrast to the old city, the newer parts of the city are planned, filled with parks, gardens, and open spaces.

Hindus and Muslims have co-existed in harmony throughout the city’s long history. This is noticeable even in the native cuisine of the region. Bhopal is as famous for its vegetarian snacks as it is for its meaty curries and kebabs. The food has a distinct Mughal influence.

Bhopal is known for its four women rulers, who ruled in the 19th and 20th centuries. Qudsia Begum was the first, followed by her daughter Sikander Begum, then her granddaughter Sultan Shah Jehan Begum, who was then succeeded by her daughter Kaikhusrau Jahan Begum. Under the Begums, the city saw the construction of many important monuments, the installation of water pumps, and the formation of a municipality in 1903.

Bhopal experiences cool and dry winters and hot and humid summers. The monsoons are overcast, but the dry season is mostly clear. The summer temperatures hover around 40°C, and hence, the best time to visit Bhopal is the winter season.
