About Bhopal

Famously titled the City of Lakes, Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Founded by Raja Bhoj, Bhopal has scenic lakes, ancient ruins, and sacred mosques. Apart from this, it has managed to preserve its old-world, rustic charm despite industrialisation. Notably, Bhopal was ruled by Muslim women in the 19th century, and the reign of the begums, starting from Mamola Bai, led to a long period of peace and artistic development. While the city's northern half has a quaint, old-fashioned atmosphere, with bazaars, havelis, and mosques, the southern half has undergone extensive development, boasting new malls, wide roads, and numerous shopping complexes. The city also has two iconic artificial lakes, Upper Lake (Bhojtal) and Lower Lake (chota talab). It is also located near a UNESCO heritage site, the Sanchi Stupa. Bhopal's cuisine reflects a blend of Rajasthani and Gujrati cultures. The city's food incorporates vegetarian and non-vegetarian elements, but the Mughal influence is obvious in the lip-smacking curries and kebabs. Do not forget to try the gosht korma when you visit the city!
