About Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is the largest and most populous city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. A coastal city on the eastern shore of India, Visakhapatnam is referred to as The Jewel of the East Coast. As per ancient inscriptions, the Vizag district was under the Kalinga Kingdom and was subsequently conquered by the Eastern Chalukyas in the 7th century. The region also came under the control of Reddy Rajahs of Kondaveedu, the Gajapatis of Orissa, the Nawabs of Golconda, and then Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Later Visakhapatnam changed hands from French to British. As the legend behind the name Visakhapatnam goes, some centuries ago, a king from the Andhra dynasty encamped in the town on his pilgrimage to Banaras. Delighted with the site, he had a shrine built in honour of his family deity, Visakeswara, who in turn lent the name Visakheswarapuram to the place. This later became Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam is a great place to unwind on serene beaches, dive into divinity at ancient temples, and explore wildlife. The city's top attractions include Simhachalam Temple, Dolphin's Nose, Yarada Beach, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, and Kalasagiri, among many others. The best time to visit Vizag or Visakhapatnam is from October to March, when it is cool and pleasing.
