Bidar is said to have been named after the word, ìbidiruî, which means bamboo. The area had been known for bamboo clusters in the past and was known as ìBidaroorî. It then evolved to ìBidareî, followed by ìBidarî. It is a city situated in the northeastern part of Karnataka, on the Deccan plateau, in India. Historically, Bidar came under the rule of various dynasties, including the Bahmanis, the Sultanate of Bijapur, the Mughals, and the Nizam of Hyderabad. Bidar became part of Karnataka in 1956. The book ìBidar Heritage'', published by the state Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, states that of the 61 monuments listed by the department, about 30 are tombs situated in and around the city.
