Chandigarh was designed by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Located in a picturesque location at the foot of the Shivalik Hills, it is considered one of the best experiments in India's 20th century urban planning and modern architecture. The name of the city comes from the temple Chandimandir. This city has a prehistoric past, as the gently sloping plains of modern Chandigarh were ancient lakes surrounded by swamps. The fossil debris found on site shows the lives of a wide variety of aquatic and amphibian species supported by this environment. From the Middle Ages to the present day, the region was part of the large and prosperous state of Punjab, which was divided into eastern and western Punjab when the country was divided in 1947. The city was devised not only as the capital of East Punjab, but also to relocate thousands of refugees uprooted from West Punjab. In March 1948, the Government of Punjab, in consultation with the Government of India, approved the area at the foot of the Shivalik Hills as the location of the new capital. According to the 189293 Ambara district official bulletin, the location of the city was part of the former Ambara district. The cornerstone of the city was laid in 1952. Later, when the states were reorganised in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh on November 1, 1966, the city gained a unique distinction as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. It is a union territory and has been declared under the direct control of the central government.
