About Port Blair

Port Blair is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory in India. A place of much historical significance, it was initially founded as a penal colony in 1789 by the Government of Bengal in honour of Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company. Two years later, the colony was relocated to the Great Andaman's northeastern section and was given the new name of Port Cornwallis in honour of Admiral William Cornwallis. However, the colony was abandoned in 1796 as a result of an increase in illness and mortality brought on by the unfavourable environment. The Indian Sepoy Mutiny in 1857 provided the British with the justification to reestablish the penal colony on the islands. A building of significant importance in Port Blair's history, the Cellular Jail, was built in 1906 to banish the political prisoners to this colony. Port Blair also served as the Azad Hind Government's administrative centre from 1943ñ1944 under Subhas Chandra Bose. Today, Port Blair is the busiest tourist destination of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Surrounded by a rugged shoreline and a substantial tropical forest, the island is a paradise of biodiversity. In addition to the historical and natural attractions, Port Blair is a great place to enjoy water activities like parasailing, scuba diving, and snorkelling. Coral reefs line the shore, and if you are lucky, you might be able to see the magnificent sea turtles too. There are several ethnic groups in the city, but the most prevalent ones are the Andamanese, Jarawa, Onge, Sentinalese, Shompen, and Nicobari. Bengali is the most widely spoken language in the area, followed by Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and English.
