Formerly known as the Borjhar Airport, Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoi International Airport (IATA: GAU) is the gateway to northeast India. Several flights take off from Guwahati to reach different parts of the country, such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, etc. The airport connects remote areas in the northeast, such as Tezpur and Pasighat, to other cities.
This airport is the country’s 11th busiest airport in terms of domestic and international traffic. It is 28 km from the city centre of Guwahati, and the nearest railway station is 22 km away. Due to its strategic location, the airport is also an Indian Air Force base. For civil air traffic operations, the airport's two terminals have the collective capacity of handling approximately 850 passengers every hour. Terminal 1 mainly handles domestic traffic, while the second terminal handles international flight operations.
The Tezpur Airport (IATA: TEZ) has a rich history. The Royal Indian Air Force built it in 1942 during World War II. This runway was used as a heavy bomber base by the IS Army Air Force. In 1959, the runway was converted into an air force base. Even today, the Indian Air Force operates Sukhoi Su-30MKI from this airbase. Due to its location, Tezpur Airport is also known as the Salonibari Airport. Many flights from Tezpur to Guwahati fly weekly from the only terminal at this airport.
The name Tezpur means the City of Blood. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna’s grandson was imprisoned by Banasura in this city. When Krishna heard about this, he immediately reached the city with his army, and a fierce battle ensued. The entire city was covered in human blood, giving the city its name. Beautiful tea plantations cover the city. You can visit tea gardens, various national parks, and forests in Tezpur.
