Wow - what a find! We stayed for 5 nights, the best stay of our 4 week trip to Japan. The staff were wonderful, they understand the true meaning of hospitality. They were so polite, friendly and helpful at every interaction. We opted for a Japanese/Western room and were not disappointed. The hotel has a real sense of tranquility throughout, it really was nice. parking is available across the street and is gated overnight. We visited the ground floor café on many occasions and the lady running it was also charming. The best part of the hotel, is that every morning at 5.50am, there is an announcement over the in-room speaker, inviting you to the lobby at 6.10am to be greeted by a monk, who escorts you across the street in the dark and up the steps to the temple to observe the morning Buddhist ceremony. We took advantage of this offer, it was a very special start to my wife's birthday. We were under the impression that the event would last just under an hour, but door to door we had an amazing 2 hours in the company of the monks. You can of course turn off the speaker in your room.

I stayed here with my four year old, and we were incredibly impressed from check in to check out (yes- they even impressed a four-year old!) They were kind enough to accommodate an early check in and supplied my son with a kiddo-amenity kit, which he loved and treasured. We had a Japanese style deluxe room which was very clean and welcoming. They had water bottles, hojicha, green tea and more than enough amenity items, pillows, blankets and futons (I think 6 or 8-persons worth maybe?) The view was great and the Japanese breakfast on point as well. They also gave us to observe a morning buddhist ceremony which was a great experience. They had a Japanese style bath tub in the room and a public bath downstairs as well... it was difficult to choose which to use. I definitely hope to come back and stay here for longer. 絶対に知恩院和順会館をお勧めします。

Loved it! I was staying in one of the Japanese rooms. The place was impeccable both in terms of cleanliness and in terms of maintenance. The hot bath was certainly the best I have experienced so far in Japan. The pool is large and set in a dark stone material. Light comes from the garden two floors above. It has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere. If you are jetlagged (like I was) and/or if wake up early, I strongly recommend attending the morning prayers (they will invite you when you check in). No matter if you are Buddhist or not, you will enjoy a privileged visit at the great temple while no one is there.

We stayed for three night in this hotel. It belongs to the Chion-in Buddhist temple. We had paid for breakfast - vegetarian and very delicious, a set menu but offering changing daily. The rooms were very modern and spacious (something quite rarely seen in large Japanese cities) with a choice of full Japanese room, Western style of combination (that was where we were staying - Western beds and Japanese seating area). We were offered the participation in the morning Buddhist ceremony and we joined on one of the days. We were woken up at 4:50 AM and the by 5:30 AM the ceremony started. We were guided by someone belonging to the organization and hence were lead to the restricted area with tatami (something we were just looking at from outside on our usual ‘touristy’ tour the day before). We were instructed what to do by one of the monks (with our left hand in a praying position, taking a pinch of the incense pellets with our right hand, putting it in front of our forehead and then into the charcoal). The ceremony took close to one hour and it was an unfogetable experience. I encourage anyone who does not speak Japanese (like us) to do some reading on the structure of the session beforehand just to feel a bit more confident. But don’t worry, they will not let you do anything really “blasphemous”.
