We booked two nights at the Grange Portland in an executive room. At 160 pounds per night, the room was expensive but very reasonably priced by London standards. More importantly, it was very large at 27 sqm, far bigger than the average London shoebox hotel room. It was also very well located in Bloomsbury, a 3 minute walk from the British Museum. Value like this doesn’t come without some downsides, and the most significant is the age of the room. The couch was lumpy, the windows were drafty, most fabrics were frayed and the furniture was scuffed, the towel rack in the bathroom was hanging on by a thread, the bathroom faucet felt like it was about to disintegrate, the floor was mildly slanted, the small round coffee table seemed ready to fall apart, and the room just looked like it was badly in need of renovation. The lack of window insulation also meant little sound insulation and some traffic noise, but it’s a fairly quiet road, so ear plugs ensured a decent sleep. Having said all that, the room was definitely liveable, everything worked, the bed was firm and comfortable, and the heaters were effective. Entering the hotel is a bit quirky as the Grange Portland is one of several adjacent Grange properties, and the reception desk was at the Grange Clarendon, two doors down. To enter Grange Portland, you can’t use your room key but need to ring a door bell and a staff member will let you in. Staff were all friendly and helpful, and housekeeping did a very good job keeping everything clean. Still, it feels optimistic to classify this hotel as 4 stars, and it did not offer amenities you would expect in a four star hotel, such as a bar or a gym. We would probably not stay here again, instead opting for a smaller room in a more updated property.

Staff was great. Room was cramped, stuffy, and hot. Thank God there was a fan there that made it barely tolerable or we would have immediately decamped for more upscale digs. If they try to give you a "basement" room tell them you're going someplace else.

Worst value for money.. I’d definitely take an Air bnb and not pay for this smelly room, bad service, checkin in one building, the room is in another and the breakfast in a third. Service annoyed me by knocking on door while sleeping in the morning and also late afternoon. Every time you go inside you have to ring the bell… very old amenities and breakfast is totally not worth it .. if it was 5 pounds a day it would make sense but not 50. Only advantage that it’s quite calm area, and around 15 minutes walk to the Thames.

I have stayed here with work as we get a company rate and it is very interesting stay. It is a great location only 10 minutes walk from Tottenham Court Road and less than 4 minutes to Holborn, and right next door to the British Museum, Its perfect for Tourists. It is an old building however, nicely renovated inside and with modern bathrooms. I also liked the fact there was a small kitchen in the room with a fridge and microwave. The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms too. there is WIFI in the rooms and it is nice and calm as it overlooks a park so there is no loud traffic at night. The breakfast is good, however only cold food, with great service.
