Visited here on a really hot day, the path way was really long. We took a lot of pictures along the path, it was very busy and crowded when we had gone. Should have been more prepared for the long hike, on the way back we ran to the convenience store for an ice cool drink. Very beautiful scenery and very peaceful walking through nature.

It was not really crowded when i reached there at around 8am. It got really crowded by the time it was 9am, so i would advise to go much earlier to avoid the tourist crowd. There is parking nearby as well if you are driving. It was huge inside and many things to see inside. The architecture was beautiful and the history of this shrine dated back millennium ago. Very impressed! Must visit shrine! You can even pay money to get things to write your wishes and hang it.

I had the opportunity to visit the iconic Thousand Torii Gate at the last minute, leveraging its 24-hour public access. This decision allowed me to explore other UNESCO World Heritage Sites during the day, saving this remarkable site for the night. Visiting at night, especially on a Tuesday between 10:30pm and 11:00pm, presents its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The advantage was the breathtaking scenery under the night sky, providing a perfect backdrop for photos without the intrusion of strangers. However, the serene quietness also brought an eerie atmosphere, though the path was well-lit. Interestingly, there were other photographers seizing the tranquil night for creative shots. Concluding my stay in Kyoto with this visit was a decision I'm profoundly grateful for. It offered a unique and unforgettable experience, enriching my collection of memories with something truly special.

Extremely crowded in the first 500m but majority of tourists will drop off after visiting the main temple. It would take ~2h to have a walk to the top of the mountain, it’s less crowded so you can have your owned space for pictures. Very nice view to Kyoto especially during the sunset from the observation deck. Lots of shops for drinks and food, vending machines on the way so you don’t need to bring lots of water or snacks
