This is a small dirty hotel that only fits single rooms they call double. I booked a double but they didn't have it. Only a large single bed available absolutely different from the pictures. Without another option for us we left. Later they refused to cancel the reservation although the booking promised a different room. Stay at Hilton, it is the same price and, differently, it is decent.

Good: very friendly, responsive and helpful staff. We were in the hotel 5 nights. This is the second time we have stayed at the Mercure Paddington this year. Previously, there were no negatives. On this visit, the first room we were in was unsatisfactory with a sloping ceiling over one side of the bed - with many corners to bump into - and a rather cramped bathroom. We raised these, and other, problems with the staff and were moved to a much better room. However, both rooms, did have one major problem not encountered in our first visit. Specifically, the shower bath. To have a shower (or bath) required one to step over the 22" high side of the bath. In itself, not a major problem for most people, but there were *no* secure hand holds anywhere. Now think of stepping in or out of a soapy bath onto (or from) a wet (soapy) floor with *nothing* to grab onto if you slip. This I view as a major safety issue that needs attention. The control of the bath/shower was somewhat arcane with no indication as to what the various taps actually did. Finally, the water (especially in the first room) was very hot (there was a warning by the hand basin). For that shower one really needed to step into the bath to operate the controls and get the water temperature correct. The bath/shower problems could be overcome with (1) the addition of one or two "grab" bars, (2) printed information about shower operation, and (3) hot water temperature reduction (I had believed there were regulations in the UK concerning the water temperature from a hot tap).

I was booked in to room 3.17 which faces Paddington Station. With the flood lights shining right through my window, I was barely able to get any sleep. Might be a good idea to get black-out blinds put in these rooms?! Also the hairdryer didn't work!

It's an old building and is poorly planned out as the use of space leads to areas with lots of room not being used and others areas being really cramped. The photos don't tell the full picture. I couldn't walk around the bottom of the bed in my room (416) it was so crammed in and there was a desk that was pointless as there wasn't space to pull the seat out and sit on it comfortably at the desk. And you'd have to find somewhere to move the bin to. On arrival there was no remote and once obtained, TV still not working so someone had to come up and sort out plugging it in behind the screen. The shower doors were a tight squeeze but the shower was good. The rest of the bathroom was spacious but everything was crammed into one corner - so it was wasted space! P The room was hot so I got the air con on but at night it was noisy but needed it on to fight the heat that was coming from the fridge that doubled as a bedside table. Woken early by neighbouring door next to my room being opened and closed numerous times and conversations being held right outside my door. Overall I was glad to leave as, despite lots of things to soften the blow like mini bottles of wine, coke in fridge etc, it didn't make up for what was an uncomfortable stay. When I checked out I wasn't asked how things were and wasn't even thanked which was a shame because the staff had been great until that point. Mixed feelings to be honest as the location was great but I didn't sleep well and didn't feel comfortable overall. Not sure how the hotel overcomes these issues without rethinking layout and having more single rooms. But in the meantime, advertise the hotel more honestly and openly would help. Advertise the smaller rooms as 'compact' and reduce the price and people will be happier I imagine.

Zakaria was very friendly and helpful at check in. He’s a great asset to the hotel. Just steps from Paddington Station and right around the corner from Hop on hop off bus stops. 👍🏼 Grace was also very helpful and kind this morning at check out. She stored our luggage for us and was very friendly. Great staff at this hotel!! 👏🏼 Beds are quite small and you do hear trains from your room, so be prepared that.
