About Agra

Agra is a city in northern India's western state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located on the Yamuna River in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, approximately 222 km in the southeast direction of Delhi. The Vedic Sanskrit epic Mahabharata made an early mention of an "Agravana," and Ptolemy is credited with naming the location "Agra." Early in the 16th century, Sultan Sikandar constructed the city as the seat of the Delhi Empire. During some of the Mughal Empire's history, Agra also functioned as the Mughal capital. The city was successively conquered by the Jats, Marathas, Mughals, the king of Gwalior, and then the British in 1803. The Taj Mahal, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage monument in 1983, is what most people associate with Agra. The Taj Mahal, a complex mausoleum, is sometimes cited as the absolute pinnacle of Mughal architecture in existence. It was constructed in the middle of the 17th century for Mumtaz Mahal, the favourite wife of Emperor Shah Jahan.
