The name Puttaparthi translates to "anthill village". As the spiritual home of Sathya Sai Baba, the town of Puttaparthi blends the past with the present, transporting visitors back to the Ashram era while embracing the modern world's influences.

Seeking Sathya Sai Baba's blessings, thousands of his devotees visit Prashanti Nilayam—the main Ashram—daily. Sai Baba used to conduct regular religious sermons here before his death in 2011. The Asham also has a Ganesha Temple, museum, hospital and space centre. Prashanti Nilayam is decorated for Sai Baba's birthday every year on the 23rd of November.

September to February is a great time for sightseeing, undertaking excursions, and for other tourist activities. Summer is rather hot here. However, the monsoons are a fairly good time to visit, so you can make a short journey or a visit to the temples at this time also.

Only vegetarian cuisine is offered in the 8 km radius of the ashram and there is a ban on liquor in this town because of its religious significance. However, the town has a wide range of cuisines, ranging from Sarkarai Pongal and Kancheepuram idlis to Puliyodharai.
