Diu was once ruled by dynasties like the Mauryans, Satavahanas, Chalukyas, and Shahs of Gujarat. The ruler of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, signed a pact with the Portuguese fearing an invasion from the Mughal Emperor, Humayun. Under the terms of the alliance, the Portuguese were allowed to build a fort on the island.
