During the Portuguese reign, Goa reached its pinnacle of prominence. Old Goa increased in size and splendour in the 16th century. The state was as vibrant and affluent during their time as it is now. As Goa was formerly a Portuguese colony, you can find Portuguese influence in Goa's culture and cuisines. The ruins of forts and other structures provide a hazy impression of the state’s history. The churches, monasteries, convents, and temples give a glimpse into the Portuguese administrative capital nearly lost to the British and Dutch.

Goa has its own distinct culture, shaped by 450 years of Portuguese rule and the various rituals and traditions they established.
