The Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport (IATA code: GWL) is in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It is named after the royal Scindhia family, who made a significant contribution to the development of Gwalior. Gwalior Airport is a civil enclave located at the Maharajpur Air Force Station, about 10 km northeast of Gwalior. The Gwalior Air Base is the only operational base of the Indian Air Force having two corresponding operational runways. Jayaji Rao Scindia erected the Jai Vilas Palace, also known as the Jai Vilas Mahal, to welcome King Edward VII, who was visiting India at the time. It was constructed in 1874. The vast, plush carpet adorning the Durbar Hall, one of the world's largest, was fabricated by the prisoners of the Gwalior Fort. They took 12 long years to weave this.
