About Khajuraho

Located in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is among the most famous archaeological sites in India. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the village is home to exquisitely sculpted temples devoted to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Jain deities. Khajuraho boasts some of the most mesmerising temple art in the world. The temples of Khajuraho were built during the rule of the Chandela Dynasty, which lasted between the 10th and 11th centuries CE. Spread over an area of 6 sq km, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments ó as it is formally known ó is a cluster of 23 temples that make up the western, eastern, and southern groups. These temples are splendid examples of Nagara-style architecture and are famous for their symmetrical sculptures in fascinating poses. You can rent a bicycle to explore the area. Once known as Kharjuravahaka, the village of Khajuraho was dotted with around 85 temples. After the decline of the Chandela Dynasty in the late 11th century, a period of chaos followed. Owing to its remote location, the village never really came under the control of Mughal conquerors. These temples largely remained in ruins before the British army captain TS Burt stumbled upon them. Since then, the destination has become popular among historians and tourists. Today, Khajuraho is a quiet village with tourism as its mainstay. The best time to visit Khajuraho is from October to March, which is the best time for temple tours. A celebration of the Indian classical dance tradition, the Khajuraho Dance Festival is organised here in February.
