About Gaya

Gaya is a historical city in the state of Bihar, around 100 km from the capital city of Patna. Gaya derives its name from the name of the demon, Gayasur. This city is the sacred place where Prince Siddhartha meditated under the Bodhi tree to achieve enlightenment. Gaya was a part of the Magadha empire, which played a crucial role in the development of Jainism and Buddhism.


After Patna, Gaya is the second-largest contributor to the state's economy. Agriculture is the district's most important economic activity. Rice, wheat, potatoes, and lentils are cultivated here.
