About Gaya

Gaya is a city in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the second-largest city in the state. The district extends over an area of 4,976 square km. Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Bodhi Tree 

The Bodhi tree is considered to be the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment. The tree located at the southern side of Mahabodhi Temple is not the actual tree where Buddha attained enlightenment, but the fifth generation of that original tree. One legend linked to this tree is that Ashoka's wife was so jealous of her husband's continuous devotion to Buddha that she had the tree felled, but Ashoka nurtured the roots with milk, and it slowly revived. The tower is layered with motifs, niches, and engravings, in addition to carved sandstone and granite railings. The sanctum houses a gold statue of Buddha.
