About Shirdi

Shirdi is a small, beautiful village in Ahmednagar District, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the place that Sai Baba called home for more than 60 years. It is a secular place, where all religions are treated as one with an emphasis on belief, faith and the power of patience. Sai Baba's identity and date of birth are unclear, but other historians claim that he was born in 1838 AD and that his real name was Haribhau Bhusari. Around 1854 AD, Sai Baba made his first visit to Shirdi. Sai Baba lived his entire life in Shirdi after returning there in 1858. Shirdi's Sai Baba Temple was constructed by Shrimant Gopalrao and Sai followers around the year 1922 AD. This temple is one of Sai's most distinctive temples because it was constructed mostly in Hindu architectural style. Sai was a strong proponent of Hindu-Muslim harmony, which is why some Muslims as well as Hindus were among his followers. The temples of Sai are open to followers of all religions. Crowds usually start to arrive on Wednesday night for Thursday, which Sai Baba devotees regard as an auspicious day. Weekends tend to be busier than weekdays. On weekdays, the best time for a calm puja is somewhere between noon and dusk. The best time of year to visit Shirdi, weather-wise, is from December to March when the weather is cool and pleasant.
