On February 2, 2006, the airport was designated as an international airport. It is one of Kerala's busiest airports. The airport was developed with funding raised from NRIs in Gulf countries in the 1990s. Later, substantial upgrades such as high-tech facilities, runway expansion from 6,000 to 9,000 ft, and many more were completed.
