Diu Airport (IATA code: DIU) was built in 1954 and became operational in 1955 when Diu was under Portuguese rule. The airport is located in Diu, and serves the nearby towns of Veraval and Jafrabad as well. It is located 7 km away from the city. It has a single terminal that manages domestic flights and can handle up to 100 passengers, both arrivals and departures. The airport has limited connectivity. Air India is the only airline operating from Diu Airport and connects Diu to Mumbai.

About Diu

Diu, part of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, is located off the coast of Kathiawad near Veraval in Gujarat. The Arabian Sea bounds the city on three sides and Amreli District (Gujarat) on the north. Diu is connected to the mainland through two bridges.

Diu was part of the Mauryan empire before coming under the control of the Portuguese. Diu was liberated from the Portuguese in 1961 and became a part of the union territory of Goa, Daman, and Diu. Eventually, on 19 December 1987, Daman and Diu became a separate union territory of India. In 2020, Daman and Diu was merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

As per mythology, Diu was ruled by a ‘daitya’, who was beheaded by Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra. The temple dedicated to the daitya named Jalandhar still exists here and is a famous tourist attraction.

Diu is a famous tourist destination because of its stunning natural beaches. The island hosts Diu Festival in December every year, attracting several tourists. Visitors in Diu can enjoy Portuguese cuisine and traditional Gujarati dishes. Lobsters, crabs, and fish are specialities here.
