Nashik
About Nashik

Nashik or Nasik derives its name from ‘Nasika’, a Sanskrit word which means nose. It is a city located in the state of Maharashtra, approximately 166 km from the state capital of Mumbai. According to the legend of Ramayana, Nashik is the place located on the banks of the Godavari River where Laxman, at Lord Rama’s request, cut the nose of the demon Shurpanakha. After Mumbai and Pune, Nashik is the third-most populous city in Maharashtra. The Godavari river originates from the Brahmagiri Mountain in Trimbakeshwar, around 30.2 km from Nashik and flows past the city. The river is heavily polluted due to severe pollution caused by factories located near the city but measures are being undertaken to clean up the river. Like Nagpur is called the Orange city of India, Nashik is known as the Grape city of India. The Nashik region accounts for nearly half of the country’s grape production. Nashik is also called the Wine capital of India since it accounts for nearly 50% of the total wineries in the country. Sula Vineyard is the region’s largest and most prominent vineyard . Nashik also hosts many wine festivals during the harvest season, including the SulaFest and the India Grape Harvest with stalls by many local grape farmers as well as big wineries. Nashik is well-connected to other parts of India by road, rail and air; however, it serves a very small number of commercial flights. Its proximity to the Mumbai International airport is a boon to the residents. The Nashik Railway Station serves as the main railway station of this area and has frequent trains to places like Nagpur, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata.
