Beautiful little building, can't say anything about the interior as it's been shut!! Reading the sign it does sound like it would be interesting inside.

I suspect that many aren't aware and do not realize of how historical this place is. Rome is simply crazy with its historical sites. There are so many such brilliant places that there is no end to their number. This is an ancient structure and it was part of the estate of the legendary but real person, Gaius Cilnius Maecenas (c. 70 - 8 BC). He was a well-known philanthropist (Mecenate = patron, patron of the arts. Yes, this universal word came from this name!), especially the patron of young poets. And this building is part of the famous Gardens of Maecenas. It was dug up in the second half of the 19th century. It is assumed that the Auditorium was meant for poetry readings and theatrical events. This building is over 2000 years old.

Single visit booked via no. 060608 of the Capitoline cultural heritage. Site open a few times a year, according to predefined calendar to be consulted on the website of the Capitoline superintendence. Treat yourself to 1 hour of your time in this splendid place of ancient Rome, which covers a period from the 2nd century. to. C. to the 2nd century d. C. in its various archaeological stratifications. If you then find the right day, when the place is deserted or almost deserted, and you can't even hear the traffic on the adjacent Via Merulana, then it will be an almost mystical experience: you will feel like you are together with Claudio, Agrippina, Nero and Maecenas himself. The photos and videos do not do this magical place justice. Absolutely worth visiting.

You pass by and you don't know what it is...always closed...a well-kept but unusable garden. And instead it is a rare hidden pearl that can only be visited with a guide, in a group and for extraordinary openings. It is truly beautiful, much more than suggestive... almost magical. The story of his events and the conflicting historical reconstructions (nymphaeum or auditorium?) manages to restore to the imaginative imagination the sight of a waterfall or the claque in the stands. The paneling present tells more of the history of the place than of the structure. I really liked it very much. Please, when going up or down, do not step on the ancient herringbone floor.
