Stayed here for a long weekend and was very happy with both the central and easy to access location, and also the general quality of the hotel. The rooms are quite strangely designed in an attempt to section parts of the room off, in contrast to the open-plan design most hotels opt for today. It also meant that the lighting was incredibly annoying, extremely unclear on how to light the room up or an appropriate master switch by the bed was absent. The towels had signs of wear which was disappointing and there are no toiletries to make use of in the bath. Breakfast was not good at all, in fact, the whole room had a slightly strange smell. When I visited the buffet I opened up some of the containers and the smell alone put me off. The food was mass produced and lacking quality. Great thing is that in Shanghai you are always only a short walk from a decent breakfast. When checking out, try to avoid the lady with a distinctive facial feature. She is quite rude and had a go at one of her employees (I am assuming she was a manager) based on how they were handling me getting a refund on my deposit, without once making eye contact or addressing me. With my conversational mandarin, I could also hear that she was being very rude to the staff member. Seemed to be the typical Chinese culture where it is often difficult to get very simple things completed and there is little element of true customer care. Overall the stay was good and restful but the hotel lacks a lot of finesse especially considering the behaviour of some members of staff.

An older hotel with a grand lobby but the comfortable, clean rooms have been modernized. Great location just a block from the Nanjing Road pedestrian area. Most staff have at least some English, I never had problems being understood. Didn't eat there so can't comment on restaurant. Gym is fine, you also have access to a pool at the Grand Central across the street. Wifi could be better. Would stay there again.

Nice hotel, very good location. Breakfast is not great, but ok. The doormen were totally useless for getting taxis. Four of them, unable to hail passing free taxis. So, take care of your own transport arrangements if you stay here.
