Gigli d'Oro Suite

This was our 6th stay at the hotel and every other visit would have been a 5* review. The location is excellent, the rooms were fantastic and the staff super helpful. But that is a description of previous visits. This was our first stay since the pandemic and a few things have changed. First of all, one of the reasons we always stayed here in the past was that the hotel is tucked away in a quiet side street off Piazza Navona. It isn't quiet any more. There is a restaurant close by that has loud music playing until the early hours every night and a small bar has opened a couple of doors down from the hotel. The bar seems to attract a lot of excitable locals who can't have conversations at normal volume. Everything is yelled and screamed, usually until about 2.30 am. Next is something I noticed other reviewers have commented on - virtual reception. This again is something new since our last stay. In the past the staff have been warm, welcoming and super helpful. This time... well, its just that they never seem to be there. When we arrived at the hotel, nobody was there to greet us and the door access code we had been given did not work. Nobody answering the buzzer. We did eventually manage to get hold of someone to let us in, but its not a great start to your stay. In the 5 nights we were at the hotel we maybe saw staff on 3 occasions - usually breakfast. You do very much get the feeling that you're being left to fend for yourself. Even the morning we checked out, no staff were at the hotel. I have worked in hospitality for over 20 years and at a minimum you should be present for a guests arrival and departure. Its just polite if nothing else. The same company owns another full service hotel in the area and it seems quite clear that this is now their main focus and Gigli d'Oro is more of an afterthought - the other hotel is where all the staff are based. Other issues... rooms starting to look a little tired... rooms insanely hot so you have to open windows to cool down (see earlier comment about noise)... drains in bathroom particularly smelly. And breakfast... never could figure that one out. Some days it's there... some days it isn't. Really disappointed to have to write a review like this but what was our go-to place to stay in Rome has now become somewhere we wouldn't visit again. Such a shame.
