The room environment and equipment are very good. There are only 14 rooms, and can really take care of every guest. Dinner was not very impressive,can be better

What a wonderful stay we had. We booked the ＜Annex＞Japanese-style Suite with Outdoor Bath RD2 and we're blown away by the size and expanse of the space (normally when you see rooms online they try to make them look bigger than what they are, but in this case the room was so so large and amazing, much bigger than it looked on the picture). With a massive couch, big open living area and huge balcony that had sliding doors that opened all the way up, plus the private outdoor onsen was very big too, easily fitting us both in there. The hotel is definitely out of the way and quite a trip from the Shinkansen at Odowara but we got two trains and a taxi to get to the hotel. On the food side of things, we had breakfast and dinner included in our plan. There was a lot of food, we really didnt eat lunch most days. I would say though that the food can be "adventurous" for a western palate if you are not sure to all the different fish dishes and pickles etc (good thing is there is a FamilyMart right at the bottom of the hill) We had a beautiful and relaxing stay surrounded by nature with lots of walks and scenery to take in.

I think the location, rooms and ambiance is great. onsen is amazing and the view is breathtaking. However the place has some real fatal flaws. There is no food unless it’s at stated times and the food does not cater to dietary restrictions. we got there at 330 and without lunch and there was no food available even for purchase and had to wait for dinner. We noted no pork but there was pork in the food and when noted the feedback was it’s too late to make changes and we just go hungry. The dinner and breakfast were just ok. For the price you are paying you are getting mediocre food at best.

We had a wonderful stay during our trip to Kai Sengokuhara. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They also catered to my gluten free restrictions with the utmost care. With every meal I received special gluten free dishes prepared just for me and the server made sure to speak to me about my food to assure me it was gluten free. I can't recommend this Ryokan enough for their generous hospitality and friendly service!
