If you want a relaxing and tranquil getaway that is in Tokyo, but feels like you’re miles and miles away from the city, look no further. Yuen Bettei Daita blows me away; though you may not find a stocked mini bar and 24/7 room service as you would at a large, corporate hotel, this space offers so much more: from complimentary access to the onsen (the women’s onsen has two baths - one outdoor, one indoor - shower facilities, and a sauna) to refreshing, complimentary popsicles you can enjoy after (flavors during our stay were cookies n creme, muscat, and kyoho grape; all delicious). They have a complimentary porridge service they deliver to your room upon request beginning at 9:30 pm, and you can opt into the traditional Japanese breakfast, pictured, via your room package. The rooms are surprisingly spacious (my expectations were low based on what I’ve read in these reviews!) and we loved experiencing what a ryokan looks and feels like. As some have mentioned, our room entryway is a bit tight, but that is such a small detail in the grand scheme. Yuen is less than a 1 minute walk from a subway station, so if you want to head into the city, you can! However, if you decide to stay nearby, there are so many cute cafés that are walking distance, in addition to convenience stores that are perfect for a late night snack. You can also walk deeper into the Shimokitazawa neighborhood to explore cute boutiques and restaurants (we went to Coaster Craft Beer and Kitchen while we were here, which is great for foreigners and very English speaking friendly!). My fiancé and I have thoroughly enjoyed ending our honeymoon in these facilities, and are contemplating buying a Yukata to take home (which are also available for you to lounge in during your stay!). This is such a hidden gem, and if it isn’t already listed on all of the “Best Of” travel/hotel lists, I expect it to be very soon!

Stayed at the Maisonette room which is a two storey unit with two beds. Amazing stay. the room was uniquely designed. The onsen is included in the price, and was a nicely designed facility. After the onsen, you can have as many milk bars as you want. Staff were professional and courteous. Location is next to the train station. The only thing I would suggest is when it is windy, secure the bamboo blinds outside because it bangs on the walls and is very noisy at night.

I've been to the Shinjuku branch before, and my experience was great. So, I was willing to spend more to see what differences there might be here. However, my expectations were too high. The hotel prices were high, and the breakfast wasn't much different from the Shinjuku branch. Also, the outdoor bath wasn't entirely open; it just had a small courtyard view, even smaller than the one in Shinjuku. The lounge after the bath lacked natural light, always crowded with people who hadn't checked in, and I felt uneasy finding a stranger sleeping on the porch with luggage when I wanted to go for a morning walk. Lastly, I have a small tattoo. At the Shinjuku branch, I politely asked the front desk if it needed to be covered, and they said it was fine, considering the international clientele. But here, I was rudely told otherwise, needing to buy a cover sticker to enter the hot spring. I respect each country's culture, but I don't understand why the same group would have different rules. Finally, I liked that the Shinjuku branch had vending machines selling milk after using the hot spring. I felt this place should continue that. I wanted to experience it once, but I won't revisit.
