Gaya is an important town for Buddhism and Hinduism, constantly hosting large numbers of devotees. The town of Gaya is believed to be the place where Ram and Sita performed the Pind Daan ceremony for Dasaratha. The name ëGayaí originates from ëGayasurí, the demon. According to Hindu belief, the rocky hills surrounding the town of Gaya are formed from his body. Hindus regard Gaya as the place where departed souls receive salvation. So they conduct pind daan (funeral offerings for the departed souls) here. Gaya came to be known as a significant Buddhist pilgrim site during the Mauryan rule. Emperor Ashoka built the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya in the 3rd century BC. The temple is now recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
